Genius Hour happens every Tuesday and Wednesday and we get a chance to think OUTSIDE the box. Today we brainstormed how to literally think outside the box by coming up with other ideas for how to use a box. Some ideas included a step stool, a robot costume, and lots of different toys! Then we took some matches and had to think like a genius for how to move 1 match to make a square. I hope some of you try this trick on your parents tonight! It sure is FUN for me to watch our brains twisting and turning and doing an EXTRA GREAT job thinking like a GENIUS! Our 3rd grade thinking caps sure make us work sometimes. Today's lesson taught us how to think outside the box and how important it is to never give up! These are things GENIUS people live by for sure! We will finish up this lesson tomorrow!
When Genius Hour was over, we started our very first Vocabulary Dictionary to learn our vocab words from Boomtown. We will continue this tomorrow so that by the time we are ready to take a test over our story NEXT week we will understand ALL of these words (what they mean and how to use them in a sentence.)
We are starting to wrap up some of our testing (thank goodness!). But, while some were reading today, others got to finish their Gold Rush Scavenger Hunt. If this is not done by tomorrow, you will have to miss some recess to get it done. Make sure you are using your free time wisely! These scavenger hunt papers have taught us an awful lot about the CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH. Boy were times tough for Amanda and her family! Not quite the lifestyle we have today!
We used our spelling sort cards for the first time today, and took a little time to review our "SH" and "CH" hunk and chunks. All of our spelling words have one of these in them. We need to learn which words are spelled with the "SH" like we hear in "sheep" and which are spelled with the "CH" like we hear in chicken. Don't forget to study some of your spelling words at home - our first test is on THURSDAY!
To end our day we did two special things. We looked at our new math curriculum and how to use our ZEARN accounts to practice our math. This was fun and a good review from yesterday. Tomorrow we should be able to wrap up our fist math lesson. There is so much to learn that our brains are working in overdrive sometimes by 3 o'clock, but I never hear any complaining which is so nice! We also heard all about Remi's fire truck he made out of legos and got to see one of his Royals baseball cards. He is our student of the week and we LOVED seeing his show and tell! Super job REMI!
Have a GREAT evening! Enjoy the beautiful sunshine and I can't wait to see you all tomorrow!
