After reading and mapping the story we worked on a SEQUENCING paper. I told the kiddos today that after our last 3 stories they had better know how to put things in order! We have done A LOT of that! You might remind them to finish this paper up tomorrow morning if they haven't already!
In Science we learned all about the DENVER MINT and how a coin actually becomes a coin. We then set up an experiment to see just how to CLEAN a coin. The kids were AMAZED at how many of our coins had been eaten away by some previously used chemicals. They were IMPRESSED with how SHINY the salt and vinegar concoction made them. We learned the HOW behind the WHY after doing the experiment:
How does it work? There is some pretty fancy chemistry going on in that little bowl of theirs. It turns out that vinegar is an acid, and the acid in the vinegar reacts with the salt to remove what chemists call copper oxide which was making your pennies dull.
Next, I asked them to put another penny in the mixture, but this time to NOT scrub it or rinse it off when they finished. These pennies are DRYING under the window tonight with the help of the AIR. We will look at them tomorrow to see if they have changed color at all.
In math, we took that CHAPTER ONE TEST I warned them was coming. They will be bringing these home tomorrow for you to see. They worked very hard on these and a few of them were brave enough to ask me a question or two if they had them. This is always GREAT, because 9 times out of 10 someone else has the very same question so most of the time when one asks, I stop and explain that question to everyone. I am anxious to see how they did.
Please remember that tonight they have a READING CALENDAR to take care of and that TOMORROW is PICTURE DAY! Dress to impress and be ready to show off that million dollar smile!
Have a FANTASTIC evening! The weather is absolutely BEAUTIFUL so try and get out to enjoy it!
