After our morning routine was finished we jumped right in to reading. Today we added our vocabulary web to our INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK. We discussed words like INFLATION and DENOMINATION. They all had lots to say when we talked about me being able to fill up my car with gas for only $0.75 a gallon! They couldn't believe how much more things cost now a days. In the story I shared with them a young boy was able to buy a slice of pizza for $0.15 and a can of soda for only $0.10 so for a QUARTER he could buy his lunch. After hearing that I did have to explain that the information from our story was taken in 1960 so INFLATION has definitely occurred!
Next, we looked at what actually happens at the DENVER MINT. It was really exciting to see just how a COIN becomes a coin and after taking a VIRTUAL TOUR of the mint, we wrote letters to the mint to find out even more about what happens there. We would love to head to COLORADO to see first hand what is done there and how coins actually become coins, but when our field trip budget doesn't allow such a trip the next best thing is to send a letter and see what we can learn. On Friday we will tour the POST OFFICE in Wellington to see how mail can get from one place to another place and we will take our letters we wrote to the Mint to mail! I can't wait to see the kiddos faces when they are shown the behind the scenes action at our very own POST OFFICE!
Also this morning we finished up our MONDAY - TUESDAY reading centers so EVERYONE has their new spelling words in their AGENDA now. They will need this list to help them with the BACK PAGE in their homework packet. It requires them to do three things with their word list so that hopefully we can see those TEST SCORES rise! Some of us are not doing very well on our SPELLING TESTS. The next test will be on October 22nd so please study those words between now and then!
In math we worked with STORY PROBLEMS and the kiddos did a really GOOD job with these! They assured me that they had done them before in second grade so I trusted them and as we worked through the problems I could easily tell they were being HONEST with me! =) We did introduce the term VARIABLE and today our variable was always the LETTER X. They were excited to know that they were doing some ALGEBRA when we stuck the variable into their number model.
We ended the day with a visit from Miss Paisley. Paisley is MR. TYSON EVERHART'S niece and since he was our SUPERHERO of the WEEK last week he took some time to share her with us! What a CUTIE she was too!
Homework tonight is to work some on homework packets and then also to be thinking of an address we need for our FLAT THIRD GRADERS. The orange note in the agenda will explain the address more!
Have a TERRIFIC evening!
