After our morning meeting we pulled out our COMPOSITION BOOKS and spend some time describing what we might see or do if were able to spend some time in a PARK. After all, Mr. Kang takes his bird to a park in our story and we needed to picture what he might have we spent some time playing a FUN place value game. It was no fun when the 9 was not drawn because we were trying to make the LARGEST number possible and boy oh boy were we counting on that nine being drawn. I LOVED the way we encouraged eachother and did our very best to remember EVERYTHING we have learned about place value. After the review and the game we had just enough time for a short recess before library check out.
After library checkout we worked with Mrs. Smith to show what we have learned about ADVERBS. Those darn things can be tricky, but if we slow down long enough to find the VERB in the sentence we can usually pick out the ADVERBS as well. We sure do like it when we can see "LY" at the end of a word because then we almost guaranteed that word is an ADVERB! After our ADVERB review we grabbed our COLORED PENCILS or CRAYONS and worked on a RAINBOW WRITE with our spelling words. Remember, that TEST is tomorrow.
After lunch read some of BFG. That Big Friendly Giant sure is a character. Between his snozzcumbers, his frobscottle, and then of course his whizzpoppers he really is a funny guy! We are sure enjoying this story! We are hoping to finish it up by the end of February so that our next AR CHALLENGE CELEBRATION can be a BFG PARTY of our very own!
Once we returned from music, we took time to make a STORY MAP of Happy Birthday Mr. Kang. We had to reread the story with a buddy and then put the events in order. The events each had a picture to go with them so that the pictures can help us remember how things happened. Mr. Kang sure is an interesting man. Between his love of birds, his speaking in poems, and his Chinese background he is teaching us a lot. When we had finished up our story maps we took time for a little bit of DAILY 5 CHOICE time. Mrs. Smith only has one or two students to meet with to finish up her rotation and I was able to finish my group up today so tomorrow our DAILY 5 CHOICE time will be spent working on wrapping up AR time, WRITING folder time, or finishing TO DO FOLDER time.
To end the day we spent some extra time outside because what a BEAUTIFUL day it is! I was very IMPRESSED today with the kiddos who spent some time on IXL last night. I think at least 5 of them earned some yummy breakfast this morning. We paid our SONIC and BRAUMS debt from the class store too today so some of us ate pretty darn well at school!
In red take home folders there is a READING CALENDAR and a SPELLING page. On the spelling page, I have asked the kiddos to draw a picture of the spelling word given. This is another homophone list so all week long we have been practicing by playing a memory game matching picture cards with the words so I am hoping that this paper is a really good review before we test TOMORROW.
Enjoy your evening!
