I wanted to take a quick minute to explain how AR works in my classroom. Each book the kids read, have read to them, or read with someone will give them a chance to earn AR points. After reading the book they are able to log on to accelerated reader and take a quiz over the story. The better they do on the quiz the more points they earn. Each book's points are calculated based on the difficulty of the book and the reading level of the book.
They are able to log in to the AR site from home to check to see if a book is an AR book because some books our school does not have tests for, so it is a good idea to check if you are reading because you need points. They can also log in at home to see how many points a book is worth. They CAN NOT, however, take a test over a book at home. When they are ready to test I will help them with that at school and there is a monitor password I have to enter that allows them to take the test.
Each month our class will hold an AR CHALLENGE. This month is combined with August because we were not here very much at all during the first month. By September 26th I am challenging each of them to earn 4 AR points. If they are successful in doing this they will qualify for our AR CELEBRATION. Those who do not reach the goal of 4 points miss out on the celebration. Celebrations are set to encourage kids to read. We try and put an attainable goal in front of them so that they all can reach it by the deadline.
AR is not part of their reading grade in my classroom. I do want them to grow their love for reading and not cause it to be something they hate. So far we have read "The Kid in the Red Jacket", "California Gold Rush - A Letter Home", and "A Fair Swap". One of these was a story I read to them and the other two were leveled readers that go with our reading series that I read with them. These three stories they should have taken tests over so you may want to ask them how they did. Some of them have also read a library book or two and tested over those.
Remember our goal this CHALLENGE is 4 points and the deadline for those points is September 26th.
