We began the day with figuring out just how to take this NEW lunch count. We have CHOICES now and it is AMAZING! Just ask you kiddo how they liked getting to chose what they were going to eat! I had to laugh because one of them told me he'd take the QUARTER POUNDER WITH CHEESE meal, but I told him we weren't quite McDonald's and he was just fine with that! Luckily, taco salads are his very favorite thing to eat next to quarter pounders that is! =)
After we took care of supplies and our lunch order we mingled with Miss Jamison's side for just a bit and tried to figure out which one of us knew what our friends had been up to all summer! The first kiddo to fill up their ENTIRE friend board first won a PIXIE STICK and by the time we finished we were sure glad Lyndi had been to Disney World, that Sage had gone camping, and that Preston had been swimming in the ocean! Everyone did a FANTASTIC job with this.
Later, we read the story, "Chrysanthemum". Throughout the story, people at school make fun of Chrysanthemum for her EXTRAORDINARILY LONG NAME! We listened to her friends poke fun at her and watched her wilt until she really hated going to school. After the story we looked at just how much her heart had changed throughout the story. Every time someone was nice to her and made her feel special she beamed and felt really good inside, but anytime someone made fun of her she felt a little ashamed and sad. By the end of the story, even though Chrysanthemum learned that her name was okay, her heart still was a little tattered. This was a great way for us to see just how the old saying... "sticks and stones make break my bones, but words will never hurt me", might be just a tad bit false. We ALL decided that it was VERY IMPORTANT to treat each other the way that we would want to be treated.
Next, we RACED against the CLOCK and played a fun game. In this game every one had a CLUE CARD that they had to read. As each kiddo read their card they had to do just what it told them to. One person had to shut the classroom light off showing they knew where the light switch was. Another had to run over and point the classroom clock and tell us all what time it was. Someone else had to do 10 jumping jacks that would make Mr. Day proud. By the time we ended the game we were suppose to have only let # MINUTES pass on the clock. OOPS! Today, it took us 15 minutes and 4 seconds to complete ALL of the cards. We are going to try again tomorrow!
This afternoon, we started "Third Grade Angels" during our story time and then we worked on a TYE DYE project! We had a BLAST and I cannot wait for the shirts to dry so I can wash them and we can see what they look like! We will be having a THIRD DAY OF THIRD GRADE CELEBRATION so watch for your kiddo's new shirt to be coming home on Thursday! After this activity, we DEVOURED some delicious popsicles an took a short recess!
I have to tell you that hearing things like, "this was the best first day ever!" or "man, I don't want to go home yet!" makes me smile! I absolutely LOVE spending the day with your children so thank you for allowing me to do that!
A few important details about tonight!
Check their backpacks please and look at their RED TAKE HOME FOLDERS. They do have a short homework assignment that I would like them to do this evening please.
They also have AGENDAS for the very first time this year. They will fill those out EVERY DAY and have been asked to show them to you and to have you sign them each evening. Things that they MUST DO FOR HOMEWORK have been highlighted so it will be easy for you to see what needs to be done each night.
Have a SUPER evening! Enjoy this silly weather and just so you know, I CANNOT WAIT for tomorrow! I didn't tell the kids this, but the only thing better then the first day of school... is the SECOND day of school!
