We did a lot of procedure practice today because with a two week break I spent some time reflecting on our schedule and how we could make things run just a tad bit smoother in third grade. I have moved our MATH to the morning which worked SUPER today! We had time for a LESSON and MATH STATIONS. In the afternoon with assemblies and special activities our math was getting slighted just a little. With state assessments right around the corner, I didn't want that to keep happening!
After our morning meeting, we dove right in to the day. Our new class mayor is MISS HALEY GULICK. Our secretaries our Claire and Preston. These two have done such a TERRIFIC job in the past that Mr. Adams felt they should be hired again for this! Easton is our new treasurer. Samantha is our photographer. Sophie and Anna are our vets and Lyndi and Pete are our police officers. Just in case we need an extra pair of hands to help out Torri is our substitute which will come in handy if anyone has to be gone!
In math we worked on ARRAYS and practicing more MULTIPLICATION. The kiddos did an INCREDIBLE job catching on to the fact that ROWS are written across and COLUMNS are written up and down. For math stations during our TEACHER TIME we built some arrays with M & M's and then with stickers to reinforce this just a bit more. When I wasn't working with a kiddo at TEACHER TIME they were given the freedom to work on what station they needed or wanted to. They LOVED the freedom, but the trick with freedom is that you have to be able to handle it and still get ALL STATIONS done in ONE WEEK. We are practicing to be FUTURE FOURTH GRADERS so I have no doubt that they will make me PROUD!
This afternoon, we began a PENGUIN PROJECT so that we could understand the ACTUAL SIZE of a penguin because we are starting the story, "Penguin Chick" next week. We read a story today about EMPEROR PENGUINS because Miss Jamison and I had researched this penguin species and had a few facts to share about them. We thought it was really neat that the mother emperor penguin goes to search for food while the father protects the egg and waits for the baby penguin to hatch. After learning all about Miss Jamison and my PENGUIN SPECIES, the kiddos were split in to 8 different groups and had to research their penguin species and draw a LIFE SIZE model of it. These are turning out AWESOME and we will paint them TOMORROW!
To finish the day we took time to read letters from FLAT LYNDI and FLAT STEVEN. We have a few other flat third graders who have come back so hopefully tomorrow we can read all about their adventures!
We do have Mrs. Traci Smith joining our classroom this semester. She is student teaching through Fort Hays University. We are very excited about having her in our classroom. She survived her day one with us and was such great help.
Have a TERRIFIC evening!
