We started our morning by taking care of our morning jobs! I feel like our secretary and our treasurer are working extremely hard to see that they have everything taken care of for us! Way to go JESSICA and HAGEN! I really appreciate all you two do to see that our morning runs smoothly!
After morning jobs were finished up we took care of our DLR book and then our agenda's. We ran through everything we were going to ACCOMPLISH today and some of our EYES were awfully BIG! But ya know what, when you set your mind to something you can usually accomplish it and today we did just that!
We spent quite a little time this morning discussing the events of September 11th. I know that today was only the 10th, but TOMORROW we have the FIRST ever THIRD GRADE PIONEER DAY planned so we had to move our TERRORIST lesson to today! We watched a BRAIN POP video explaining what happened on that day and then discussed how many people it took working together to make things better after such a terrible event. I was AMAZED at their interest and at how many of them thought about not only the victims in the twin towers, but also the search and rescue crews cleaning up the mess. Next we read a short story about September 12th and everyone shared how hard people must have worked to make things okay again. After our story we decided it would be a good idea to make AMERICAN FLAGS to display to show we do understand how hard people have worked to keep us safe and protect our freedom. WOW! What a GREAT bunch of third graders to be able to participate in a discussion about something so SERIOUS!
After our FLAGS were finished we went to work on our COMMUNITY because after all building is something our NATION is constantly doing! The kiddos were so busy I hated to STOP THEM FOR LUNCH! I have to tell you that for about 15 minutes I just sat in awe of their teamwork and cooperation. Our community now has a SCHOOL, a BANK, a POST OFFICE, EMERALD CITY, lots of HOUSES, PARKS, and oh so much more! They have definitely learned what a COMMUNITY needs by building their own. One of them told another, "You are absolutely the BEST brick layer ever!" Another one said at one point, "We just rock! Look guys! Check out our bridges! They are AMAZING!" A teacher just LOVES when learning can be such a GREAT experience for her students and so for just a short time I allowed my self to sit, watch, and ENJOY! Trust me it was a NICE TREAT!
This afternoon we worked on a math box page we had put in our TO DO FOLDERS and then raced against Miss Wencel's side in our HUMAN NUMBER LINE GAME! We didn't win, but we were GREAT sports and had a good talk when we finished about how it took us all working TOGETHER if we wanted to win! The winning number was 1,234, 768 which took almost EVERY single member of our class to make. It was a CHALLENGE and we will keep working at it!
Tonight they do have a READING page for homework! Also tomorrow we have our PIONEER DAY so they can dress as a PIONEER if they would like to. We will be making butter, washing clothes, panning for gold, and making some YUMMY covered wagons! It's gonna be a TERRIFIC end to a GREAT week!
Please check agendas and homework folders for me tonight so that EVERYONE can have everything handed in!
Have a SUPER evening!
